Orders on detention under Goondas Act on May 5 Thursday, April 28 2005 20:21 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Chennai:
The Madras High Court today (Apr 28, 2005) fixed May 5 for pronouncing orders on petitions filed by Junior Kanchi Seer Vijayendra's brother Raghu, Kanchi Mutt manager Sundaresa Iyer and nine others challenging their detention under the Goondas Act.
A Division Bench, comprising Justice M Karpagavinayagam and Justice C Nagappan, fixed the date for delivering their ruling after reserving orders on a batch of habeas corpus petitions (HCP) seeking to set aside the mid-January detention orders.
The HCP, filed on behalf of Raghu by his brother Prabhakaran, alleged that the detention under the Act was 'malafide' and solely to stifle the attempt to secure bail in the murder case.
The petitioners contended that the grounds for detention were vague and unclear.
Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra and his junior Vijayendra are the main accused in the murder case.
