Nine ultras including a Pakistani national, a ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) activist and three policemen were among 16 people killed across Jammu and Kashmir where a militant gave himself up and another fell in the dragnet of the security forces since Wednesday (Apr 27, 2005) night, a police spokesman said in Srinagar yesterday (Apr 28, 2005).
Four militants were killed in an encounter with security forces at Rangni Post near Trehgam on the Line of Control (LoC) on Wednesday night in frontier district of Kupwara, the spokesman said.
He said troops killed an ultra in Chikakheeth in Kalakote tehsil of Rajouri district yesterday afternoon.
In another encounter between the militants and troops in Udhyanpur area of Doda district on Wednesday evening, Lashkar-e-Toiba militant Abu Sakir Sarsi, a Pakistani national, was killed, the spokesman said.
He said a militant of Harkat-e-Jehaid-e-Islami, Mushtaq Ahmad Tantray was killed in a fire fight with security forces at Pahloo-Pahalgam, 96 kms from Srinagar in Anantnag district yesterday.
An unidentified militant was killed in a gun battle with police at Sofshali-Kokernag in Anantnag district on Wednesday night, he said, adding another militant identified as Mushtaq Ahmed Sheikh was killed in an encounter that broke out at Dahtoo-Kulgam in the same district.
Mohammad Yaseen Magray, a PDP worker and employee of the irrigation department, was shot dead by militants at a bus stand in Kulgam in Anantnag district yesterday morning, the spokesman added.
Militants abducted and killed an Assistant Sub-Inspector Ali Mohammad outside his residence at Syed Colony in Srinagar on Wednesday night by slitting open his throat, the spokesman said.
He said militants sprayed bullets on a police party at Kathi Darwaza in Rainawari area of the city on Wednesday evening causing injuries to constable Bilal Ahmed Shalbaf. He was shifted to hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.
Militants also shot at and critically injured a special grade constable Maqbool Lone near his house at Kachwa in Chandoosa area of Baramulla district on Wednesday night. He breathed his last in the hospital, the spokesman said.
He said militants abducted a teacher Mohammad Yaqoob from Pahalgam in Anantnag on Wednesday night and shot him dead. People of the village and adjacent areas protested against the militant act.
Militants shot dead a labourer Mohammad Yousuf Gujjar at his house at Tral Payeen in Pulwama district on Wednesday night.
Militants also kidnapped and later killed a released ultra Mushtaq Ahmed Mantoo at Aglar Litter in Pulwama district, the spokesman said.
Fed up by violence, a Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islami militant, Wahid Akhtar, surrendered before Army troops in Bhaderwah area of Doda. Akhtar was operating in Doda for the past one year and was instrumental in attacks on security forces and other Government security wings in the district, official sources said adding, he was later handed over to police.
A Hizbul militant was arrested in R S Pura area of Jammu district on Wednesday evening and has been sent to joint interrogation centre, they said.
