The Madras High Court today (May 5, 2005) set aside the Tamil Nadu Government order detaining Kanchi Mutt Manager Sundaresa Iyer, R Raghu, brother of Kanchi Seer Vijayendra Saraswathi and nine others under the Goondas Act.
Allowing the habeas corpus petitions filed by the 11 challenging their detention under the Goondas act, a division bench comprising Justice M Karpagavinayagam and Justice C Nagappan set aside the mid-January order holding that there was no material to show that they had committed any activity, which threatened public order or had disturbed it.
Others, whose detention under the Goondas Act were a set aside were Kadiravan, Appu, Meenakshi Sundaram, K S Kumar, Ananda Kumar, Rajini alias Chinna, Silvester alias Stalin, Bhaskar alias 'Mattu' Bhaskar and Anil Kumar.
On February 14, the Madras High Court had admitted a habeas corpus petition, seeking to set aside an order detaining Raghu, brother of Junior Kanchi Seer Vijayendra, under the Goondas Act.
