'Meningitis has not taken epidemic form in Delhi'

New Delhi: Meningitis cases have not taken the form of an epidemic in Delhi where 91 incidents have been reported and 14 people have died till yesterday (May 5, 2005), Health Minister A Ramadoss informed Rajya Sabha today (May 6, 2005).

Responding to supplementaries during Question Hour, he said the disease, which was due to bacterial infection, could be treated easily with the help of antibiotics.

Allaying apprehensions expressed by members, he said there was no cause for alarm.

The Union Health Ministry was closely monitoring the situation with the Delhi Government and both were working in tandem to check the disease, the Minister said.
