Govt to table Nanavati report in monsoon session Friday, May 6 2005 08:35 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
The Government has decided against tabling in Parliament during the ongoing budget session the Nanavati Commission report on 1984 anti-Sikh riots, a demand for which was made by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), but is likely to do so in the monsoon session.
"The Nanavati Commission report was presented to Home Minister Shivraj Patil two months back and the Government, as per rules, has six months to table it," highly placed sources said yesterday (May 5, 2005).
They said the nearly 200-page report would be tabled in Parliament during the monsoon session that begins in July.
Replying to questions on making the report public, Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Gurudas Dasgupta said the findings of the Commission should not be held back by the Government.
"If it is a matter of public importance, it should not be held back. It should be shared with people. Suspicion is worse than reality," he told reporters.
Congress spokesman Tom Vaddakan said even though BJP has demanded that the report be made public, it has not been attending the Parliament session.
"The Opposition is not worried, they are not attending Parliament and making the exchequer pay for it," he said.
