New Delhi:
A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was today (May 9, 2005) killed outside Parliament House building in New Delhi when his rifle went off accidentally, creating alarm among the security forces personnel deployed there.
Reminded of December 13, 2001 terrorist attack on Parliament, alert security forces personnel went on an alert on hearing the gunshot at around 08:00 hrs (IST), just three hours before the two Houses were to meet, police sources said.
However, they found that Constable Vipul Das's Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) went off accidentally while he was repositioning it, killing him on the spot, the sources said.
Das, who hails from Assam, was deployed at Parliament Gate on Raisina Road side when the incident occurred.
Five heavily-armed terrorists had stormed into Parliament complex on December 13, 2001, triggering an intense gun-battle with the security forces, which left 13 security personnel and the attackers dead.
