New legislation on exports to check proliferation
Monday, May 9 2005 08:12 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

On board PM's special aircraft: A new legislation on export controls norms would be introduced in Parliament next week to check nuclear proliferation.

It would clear the way for providing nuclear fuel for power projects in India as the legislation would be at par with international safeguards, sources said yesterday (May 8, 2005).

Even Russia had kept this as one of the pre-conditions for supply of nuclear fuel to India.

"As soon as we get the place, two more reactors will be added to the Kudankulam (nuclear power project) in Tamil Nadu," which has been set up with Russian cooperation, the sources said.

The issue may come up for discussions when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh meets Russian President Vladimir Putin today in Moscow.
