IAF Jaguar fighter crashes in Basti; pilot killed

Basti (UP): A Jaguar fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) today (May 11, 2005) crashed in Uttar Pradesh's Basti district soon after take off, killing the pilot and injuring three women on the ground.

The aircraft crashed at 08.20 hrs (IST) near Devri village in the district, minutes after it had left the Gorakhpur Air Base near Basti, killing the pilot, an IAF spokesman said in Delhi.

The aircraft was on a low-level tactical mission, he said, adding a code of inquiry has been ordered into the crash.

Three women labourers, who were working in the fields in the area, received minor injuries, police sources said.
