In the second major strike in as many days, militants today (May 12, 2005) hurled a grenade outside an elite private school at busy Lal Chowk in Srinagar this afternoon injuring at least 44 people, including 11 students.
The blast took place at 1445 hrs (IST) when the students of Biscoe school and its girls' wing, Mallinson school, were leaving the premises and their parents had come to collect them, official sources said.
It was not clear whether the militants had targeted the school or a slow-moving BSF vehicle, which had just passed by the area, they said.
The injured were shifted to SMHS hospital of whom six were referred to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura for specialised treatment, the sources said adding condition of two injured children was stated to be serious.
