One arrested in Delhi college girl gang rape case Friday, May 13 2005 15:34 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Delhi Police today (May 13, 2005) arrested one of the alleged rapists of a college girl who was assaulted by four men in a moving car in New Delhi, though it was still to get its hands on three of his accomplices.
Ajit, aged about 30, was nabbed by Delhi Police personnel in Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh and was brought here this morning, police sources said.
He was then produced in an identification parade before the 22-year-old victim who recognised him as being one of the four men who had sexually assaulted her.
Police were on the trail of Ajit, wanted in many cases of burglary and auto-theft, ever since the woman had made a "positive identification" of him from dossiers shown to her.
They had raided many of the addresses he had given, which later turned out to be fake, before tracking him down in Uttar Pradesh.
The other three men, who had allegedly abducted the woman near her house in south-west Delhi in the early hours of Sunday (May 8, 2005) and gangraped her, were however yet to be traced.
Police had released identity kits of the three men, aged about 30, 40 and 50, yesterday.
The sensation incident had put question mark on the effectiveness of patrolling by Delhi Police. As a fallout, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has summoned Police Commissioner K K Paul to discuss the security of women in the city.
