Chawla tipped to be new Election Commissioner

New Delhi: Information and Broadcasting secretary Naveen Chawla is tipped to become Election Commissioner to fill the vacancy caused by retirement of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) T S Krishnamurthy tomorrow (May 15, 2005).

Official sources said Chawla's name has been cleared for appointment as Election Commissioner following the elevation of B B Tandon as CEC, which he will take over on Monday (May 16, 2005).

Chawla, who was to retire in June 2005, will get a five-year tenure as Election Commissioner. The retirement age of Election Commissioners is 65.
