'UPA 1st year successful, NDA weakening democracy' Monday, May 16 2005 20:30 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
The Congress termed as "successful" the performance of the party-led Government in its first year in office at the Centre and attacked BJP-led NDA's boycott of Parliament accusing it of trying to "weaken" democratic institutions.
In her opening remarks at a four-hour meeting of Congress Working Committee (CWC), the highest decision-making forum, Gandhi congratulated Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and reposed her confidence in his "ability" to lead the coalition and implement agenda of the Government as committed in National Common Minimum Programme (NCMP).
Singh, when invited by Gandhi to brief the meeting about the performance of his Government, lauded the Congress chief's "maturity, guidance and leadership in cobbling UPA (United Progressive Alliance) and running it successfully", AICC (All India Congress Committee) general secretary Ambika Soni told reporters.
She said the Prime Minister was of the firm view that transition of power from NDA (National Democratic Alliance) to UPA was solely because of "our commitments to secularism and pluralism".
The meeting adopted a resolution placing on record Gandhi's role in "galvanising all democratic and secular forces" against NDA and attacked the six-year rule of the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)-led alliance as "marred by communalism, corruption and social tension."
The resolution said BJP and its NDA allies "have yet to come to terms with the rejection of the people in last year's general elections" and accused the saffron-led alliance of
"total lack of issues and real concerns that has resulted in their disrupting and boycotting Parliament, thereby seeking to weaken democratic institutions."
