Indian media grow popular in JK; Pak TV loses out Tuesday, May 17 2005 09:15 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Indian television channels have acquired impressive viewership in Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan radio and television are no longer popular, according to a survey.
The survey, conducted by the Centre for Media Studies (CMS), has revealed that three out of four people in the valley today think that India had developed far more and its media is viewed as more advanced, free, fair and providing more "reality news".
Although Pakistan Radio and Pakistan TV are no longer popular today nor do they have sustained viewership or listenership, little over half of people tune in to them at one time or other in a year, the survey said.
The survey, to assess the media habits in the valley, was conducted between April 20-30 last month, compresses personal interviews with 500 residents each from the Kashmir Valley and Jammu region. More than one-third respondents were women, unlike earlier surveys where the figure was less.
It showed that DD National channel was viewed more in the valley than DD Kashmir or the local DD channel "presumably because of the desire to link with the mainstream," CMS said.
CMS said radio had lost prominence as a news source. "Nevertheless, nearly ten per cent in the valley rely on radio, mostly Radio Kashmir and AIR, against only two per cent in the Jammu region," CMS said, releasing the findings through a statement in New Delhi.
