The main accused in the sensational abduction and gangrape of a Delhi university student was today (May 17, 2005) remanded to police custody till May 27 by a local court after the victim recognised him at an identification parade conducted inside the Tihar jail.
Metropolitan Magistrate Ila Rawat remanded Ajit Katiyar, arrested on May 13 in Noida, to ten days custody as requested by the police for further interrogation to extract information about his three accomplices and to make some seizures.
Earlier, the victim identified the accused at a test identification parade conducted before the Tihar Jail Magistrate.
The identification parade was ordered by Duty Magistrate Dig Vinay Singh before whom the accused was produced a day after his arrest.
The court also asked the Investigating Officer and SHO of Dhaula Kuan police station to take all steps to conceal the identity and whereabouts of the victim following a request made by her counsel.
The SHO told the court that, "We have a lot to ask. We have not yet got an opportunity to intensively interrogate the accused for extracting vital clues regarding three of his accomplices who are still at large".
He told that the police wanted to take Katiyar to some places in Uttar Pradesh including Kanpur and Noida as part of investigation and to seize two cars, a country-made pistol and mobile phones used for the crime.
The girl was allegedly abducted at gunpoint from Dhaula Kuan in South Delhi and raped while being driven around the city for two-and-a-half hours in the early hours of May 8.
