'Call to reduce greenhouse gas emissions misplaced'
Wednesday, May 18 2005 08:20 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Bonn: India yesterday (May 17, 2005) dismissed as "flawed" projections that it along with China and other developing countries would overtake developed nations greenhouse gas emissions in a few decades.

The presentation made by Surya Sethi, Adviser (Energy) Planning Commission at a seminar of Government experts on climate change being held in Bonn, brought home to the developed countries that calls for India to reduce its emissions of greenhouse gases were misplaced.

"Predictions of computer models that India, China and other developing countries would overtake developed countries greenhouse gases emissions in a few decades were flawed," an official release said.

The Indian delegation led by Prodipto Ghosh, Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests said India's policies on energy efficiency, promotion of renewable forms of energy and emphasis on mass transport would in any case enable sharp reductions in emissions, provided that the necessary technologies were transferred on non-commercial terms to India.
