Houston:
A medical student of Indian origin has been chosen as one of the 'Five Outstanding Young Houstonians' (FOYH) for 2005.
Chirag Patel was presented the award, established by the Houston Junior Chamber of Commerce Foundation (Houston Jaycees), at an annual awards banquet to honour community leaders in Houston last evening (May 18, 2005).
"I am truly flattered and feel this award programme highlights the achievements of young Houstonians. For me, this award is a confirmation of the volunteering that not only I, but countless other young individuals do across our city, nation, and world," Patel said.
"I have always been fortunate to find mentors who helped cultivate my interests in and passion for community advocacy. Besides, a great upbringing, thanks to my parents, have helped mould me into the person I am today," he added.
Other recipients of the award were City Councilman Michael Berry, Jacqueline Baly Chaumette, Dr Caroline Long and Mike Madden.
Chirag was a year old when his parents moved to Houston from England. He spent his childhood in spring before studying at John Hopkins University, where he obtained degrees in Biomedical Engineering.
Over the last two years, Patel has been lending a helping hand at a student-run health clinic 'Healthcare for the Homeless' in Houston.
At the clinic, he works with pharmacists, public health officials and other medical students in assessing the condition of patients before presenting cases to an attending physician.
