Pramod Mahajan comes under attack from Assam CM Thursday, May 19 2005 18:51 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Guwahati:
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader in-charge of Assam, Pramod Mahajan today (May 19, 2005) came under severe attack from Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi who said that he would "see that Mahajan does not repeat Godhra here by creating communal tension."
Accusing Mahajan of launching a SMS campaign in Assam to evict Bangladeshis from the State, Gogoi asserted, "I will never allow the traditional communal harmony here to be disturbed by Mahajan.
Following SMS and door-to-door campaign by some youth organisations and students unions in upper Assam during the last one month, suspected Bangladeshis were fleeing to lower Assam districts in large numbers.
"This is the land of Sri Sri Sankar Deb and Ajan Fakir who propagated communal harmony. I will not allow anyone to take the law into their own hands," Gogoi told a press conference on the completion of four years by his Government.
"The SMS campaign is the brainchild of Mahajan's and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) plan to create communal disharmony. It's BJP's game plan and others are playing into their hands," he averred.
During his visit in Guwahati on May 8, Mahajan had said, "Large scale infiltration has posed a security threat not only to Assam, but is threatening to change the entire demographic pattern of the nation. Therefore, it is all the more relevant that the IMDT Act is scrapped."
