New Delhi: The Rs 2427.40 crore Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project off Tamil Nadu coast was on Thursday (May 19, 2005) cleared by the Union Cabinet.

Announcing the decision, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said a special purpose vehicle would be set up for this purpose.

The long-pending project has been cleared ahead of Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu expected by the end of this year.
