'Trinamool won't disintegrate but emerge stronger' Friday, May 20 2005 08:08 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Bolpur (WB):
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee yesterday (May 19, 2005) said people would not excuse those people who had breached the trust of ordinary party members by trying to break the party.
"There can be temporary crisis. But the Trinamool will tide over that and come stronger. Our party won't disintegrate at the machinations of a few turncoats who are power hungry," Mamata said at a public meeting in Bolpur but did not name anyone.
Launching a tirade against those who believed in 'coming closer' with the ruling party at Centre, Mamata said, "I don't support such opportunistic policies."
"Many people have asked me why did you trust such people. I said in reply there is no harm in trusting man," Mamata said.
Mamata's comments were made in the wake of Trinamool dissidents, led by Kolkata Corporation Mayor Subrata Mukherjee, recently floating a 'manch' to fight "Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) misrule" and forming the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) with Congress to ''keep away from communal forces and jointly fight the Marxists in West Bengal," ahead of the elections in several Municipalities and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
A senior Trinamool leader in the district also recently left the party and joined Congress.
Mamata was addressing the meeting in support of her party's candidates for Bolpur civic polls on May 22.
