'UPA has failed to fulfill its promise to workers' Saturday, May 21 2005 16:08 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Bhopal:
Accusing the Congress-led UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Government at the Centre of failing to fulfill its promises to the workers, CPM (Communist Party of India-Marxist) today (May 21, 2005) said the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) must be implemented if the coalition wants to complete five years in power.
The UPA Government has not yet brought any law to provide minimum wages and social security to workers in the unorganised sector and agricultural labour, CPM polit bureau member M K Pandhe told reporters in Bhopal.
He said the CPM has been mounting pressure on the Central Government for implementation of various welfare measures under the Common Minimum Programme and would intensify the campaign if desired results are not seen.
On a proposal for allowing 14 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) in the banking sector, Pandhe said the CPM would vote against any bill brought for this in Parliament, as the measure would adversely affect people's interest.
Dismissing suggestions that Left parties are helpless to support the UPA Government, the CPM leader said their support was to honour the sentiments behind the mandate of the people.
Claiming that BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) Government in Madhya Pradesh has failed on all fronts, Pandhe said the CPM would launch a State-wide movement to highlight issues like power crisis, water problem, alleged atrocities on tribals and moves to privatise health services.
