Mamata rejects proposal of leading Oppn alliance Saturday, May 21 2005 19:20 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Kolkata:
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee today (May 22, 2005) rejected Mayor Subrata Mukherjee's proposal of leading an Opposition alliance against the CPM (Communist Party of India-Marxist)-led ruling Left Front in next year's Assembly poll in West Bengal saying that her party would not have truck with those who were in power with CPM support.
In an obvious reference to Congress, she said, ''I am not in politics to compromise with CPM and I do not support those who joined hands with the Marxists. Our doors are closed to those who live with CPM.''
There would be no alliance until they oppose the Marxists, she said.
Mukherjee, a dissident TC leader had formed Paschimbanga Unnyan Congress Mancha last month and floated the United Democratic Alliance with Congress and five other parties to contest the June 19 election to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) after the party chief refused to part ways with ally BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party).
Mukherjee had recently proposed that the TC supremo should lead an Opposition alliance against the Left Front.
The TC supremo said that there was no problem regarding seat sharing with BJP for the civic poll.
Ruling out any possibility of a hung board in KMC, she expressed confidence that her party would recapture the board.
Turning to Left Front's threat of probing 'corruption and financial irregularities' by the TC-led KMC board in the last five years, she said that the Government could investigate if there was any charge against anyone, but should not make baseless allegations.
