Terming as "divisive, anti-constitution and anti-secular", BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) today (May 22, 2005) said the party will launch a nationwide agitation on Centre's decision to provide 50 per cent reservation to Muslims in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on the basis of religion.
"The decision to provide reservation in AMU on the basis of religion is divisive, anti-constitution and anti-secular and the party will launch an agitation to oppose it in the country," BJP vice president M Venkaiah Naidu told reporters after a party function in Indore.
He also informed that the BJP general secretary Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has written a letter to the President A P J Abdul Kalam to intervene in the matter is his capacity as the visitor of the AMU, which is a central university.
"I am also happy to note that some of the intellectuals including professors of the university are opposing the decision in this regard," Naidu said.
The BJP will launch a drive to raise awareness among the people about the issue, he said.
When asked about the performance of the Madhya Pradesh Government led by Babulal Gaur, he said that the Gaur Government is doing good work.
Referring to the issue of Uma Bharti, Naidu said the party president will take a decision about her and every member of the party including her will do whatever the party asks them to do.
