Bakery case: SC committee summons Chandrakanta Sunday, May 22 2005 14:05 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
A Supreme Court appointed committee, enquiring into the flip-flops of Best Bakery key witness Zaheera Sheikh, has summoned for questioning Chandrakanta alias Bhattu Srivastav, a Congress corporator from Vadodara who along with BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) MLA Madhu Srivastava allegedly paid huge bribes to her to change her statement.
Chandrakanta has been summoned to appear on May 26 before the high-powered committee headed by Supreme Court Registrar General B M Gupta. Gupta is assisted by Joint Commissioner of Police Kanwaljeet Deol in the enquiry.
A recent TV sting operation has shown that Chandrakanta, a corporator from Vadi area where Best Bakery is situated and Madhu Srivastava had paid lakhs of rupees to Zaheera to retract her statement in the case.
The committee has already examined Zaheera at length and also questioned social activist Teesta Setalvad.
The Supreme Court had last year quashed a Gujarat High Court order acquitting all 21 accused in the case and had ordered fresh trial at Mumbai instead of Ahmedabad.
