DMK to back Cong candidates in Karnataka by-polls
Wednesday, May 25 2005 10:11 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Chennai: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a major partner in the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the centre, has decided to support the Congress candidates in the Shimoga Lok Sabha by-poll and Chamarajpet Assembly by-poll in Karnataka, to be held on June 2.

This was disclosed in a press release by the DMK party General Secretary, K Anbazhagan, last night (May 24, 2005).

While the Shimoga Lok Sabha by-poll was necessitated by the resignation of S Bangarappa, who is seeking a fresh mandate after switching over to Samajwadi Party (SP) from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Chamarajpet Assembly seat fell vacant as former Chief Minister, S M Krishna resigned it upon his appointment as Governor of Maharashtra.
