'Political delays affecting Defence acquisition' Friday, May 27 2005 18:05 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Mumbai:
The delay in political decision-making was hurting Indian Navy's Defence acquisition programmes, said Admiral Arun Prakash, the Chief of naval staff.
"We are lagging behind," Admiral Prakash said in Mumbai today (May 27, 2005), while adding that even Pakistan Navy has got three submarines.
He said the effects of the delays would be felt in the long term, as it would lead to gap in Navy's capabilities.
Replying to a question, Admiral Prakash said the delays were taking place at highest political level and it was also leading to escalation of costs.
The Naval Force Chief was speaking to reporters after the launch of the third stealth frigate, which has been constructed by Mazagaon Dock Ltd and launched by his wife Kumkum Prakash today.
Admiral Prakash said several countries like Seychelles, Myanmar, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Mauritius have shown interest in buying naval hardware from India and are waiting to place orders for Offshore Patrol Vehicles and Fast Attack Boats.
"It is, however, to be considered whether we are capable of providing support to export," the Naval chief said.
He also expressed concern at 'inappropriate' funding for Navy. "There is no assurance over funding, our budgeting is for a short period stretching from one to two years and that too materialises in May," he said while stressing the need for a long-term and well planned funding for the Navy.
He said the stealth frigate would add to Navy's capabilities and would be fitted with latest weapon system.
