Best Bakery case: Court to quizz Zaheera tomorrow
Sunday, May 29 2005 09:54 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Mumbai: The special court conducting the re-trial in the Best Bakery carnage is likely to pose a few questions to the prime witness Zaheera Sheikh tomorrow (May 30, 2005).

The court, on May 25, had asked Zaheera to remain present in the court on May 30, as it would like to question her.

After the prosecution concluded cross-examination of Zaheera on May 25 for the second time, the court expressed its desire to question the witness.

The prosecution was re-examining her in the light of the fresh evidence placed before the court in the form of two videos -- one capturing the police rescue operations at the bakery a day after it was attacked on March one, 2002 and the other focussing on Zaheera's interview taken by a television journalist some days after the attack on bakery.

As Zaheera had turned hostile during the re-trial in the special court in Mumbai, the prosecution decided to cross-examine her in the wake of fresh evidence presented to the court.

Meanwhile, the special court visited Vadodara on May 26 and May 27 to inspect the site where a violent crowd had attacked and killed 14 persons on the night of March one, 2002 during the post-Godhra riots.

Advocates from the prosecution and the Defence side had accompanied the Special Judge A M Thipsay at the site.

The court had first visited the site on the evening on May 26 in order to assess the nighttime scenario of the bakery and again visited the bakery the next morning.

The bakery was attacked twice on March one, 2002 night and the next day early morning, according to prosecution.

Altogether, 72 witnesses have been re-examined till now during the re-trial.
