'JK should be resolved by Indo-Pak consultations'

Beijing: China today (May 31, 2005) hoped that India and Pakistan will resolve the thorny Kashmir issue through friendly and equal consultations.

"Both India and Pakistan are friendly neighbours of China and our consistent position on the Kashmir question is that we hope our two close friends will, through friendly and equal consultation, resolve this historical and complicated issue," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said.

"India and Pakistan have taken steps to resolve the Kashmir issue peacefully and we welcome your efforts," Kong said when he was asked by a Pakistani correspondent to comment on the upcoming visit to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir by some Hurriyat leaders on June 2.
