Congress demands apology for vilification of Rajiv Wednesday, June 1 2005 20:49 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Buoyed by the Delhi High Court judgement in the Bofors payoff case, Congress today (Jun 1, 2005) demanded an apology from all those who had launched "unsubstantiated and baseless" campaign against late Rajiv Gandhi.
Party spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan told reporters that the party called upon all people having any "shred of morality and decency" who had been instrumental in the campaign against Gandhi to apologise to the nation, Sonia Gandhi and her family.
Asked whether this included former Prime Minister V P Singh, former Opposition leaders now in the party and the Government and the current allies, she said, "We are leaving none. This includes a wide spectrum."
In her opening remarks at the daily briefing she accused the Opposition leaders of having "deliberately misled an entire nation, something that cannot be condoned by any democracy. They raked up a campaign against Rajiv Gandhi without a scrap of evidence. Besides, they spent Rs 250 crore to investigate unsubstantiated and baseless charges."
Asked whether the Congress was for the CBI going for appeal in Supreme Court, she said, "We are not talking about the individual case. We believe law should take its course."
