'Reforms meaningless without expansion of UNSC' Wednesday, June 1 2005 10:36 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Reykjavik:
Asserting that the Group of Four (G-4) draft resolution prepared by India, Japan, Brazil and Germany suggesting changes in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) was the best one, Iceland Prime Minister Halldor Asgrimsson has said reforms of the world body without expansion were meaningless.
He said this when he called on President A P J Abdul Kalam, who is currently on a three-day visit to the Iceland.
"We share the views of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan that reforms in the world body without any expansion would be meaningless without any expansion and that the draft resolution of the G-4 countries was the best one," he said.
This resolution has the best chance of succeeding, Asgrimsson said while elaborating on the rationale behind Iceland's decision to co-sponsor the draft resolution.
India, Brazil, Germany and Japan, which constitute the G-4 countries, had prepared a draft resolution on expansion, which will be placed before the United Nations next month and would require two-thirds majority for adoption by the 191-member body.
The draft, which was circulated earlier this month at the UN headquarters, lays down guidelines for size and component, mode of elections of countries and working pattern of the Security Council. It also has a review clause to evaluate the performance of UNSC member countries after every 15 years.
