IAF officer Anjali Gupta released from close arrest
Thursday, June 2 2005 19:18 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Bangalore: IAF Flying Officer Anjali Gupta has been released from "close arrest" after medical and psychiatric evaluation found her to be medically sound and fit, IAF sources said today (Jun 2, 2005).

A panel of medical specialists, including psychiatrists, carried out tests to rule out the possibility of "suicidal tendencies" after she repeatedly sought release from "close arrest", sources said.

"She was subjected to tests as she had earlier claimed that she might take steps to end her life. The tests were to ensure that she does not harm herself once she is released," an IAF official said.

The 28-year-old officer, who is facing general court martial proceedings, has been allowed to stay in her quarters with her mother, but she would be accompanied by escorts while being taken to GCM proceedings.

Meanwhile, at the GCM today the formal trial of Gupta, who has been arraigned on seven charges of indiscipline, insubordination and financial irregularities, began. The charges were again read out.

The prosecution also produced its first witness, Wg Cdr R S Choudhry, who was earlier Adjuntant at Aircraft and Systems Training Establishment, where she is posted, in connection with a charge on "falsely claiming conveyance allowance."

Wg Cdr Choudhry, who is one of the persons accused by Gupta of sexually harassing her, produced three documents in support of the charge.

Further hearing was adjourned for tomorrow (Jun 3, 2005).
