Moderate intensity quake rocks Assam, Arunachal Thursday, June 2 2005 19:56 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Guwahati:
An earthquake of moderate intensity shook Upper Assam districts of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia, besides neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh-Tibet border areas, early this morning (Jun 2, 2005).
The tremor, bringing back memories of the killer earthquake of 1950, measuring eight plus on the Richter scale, caused cracks on walls in some buildings and glass window panes, official sources from the two districts said.
There was, however, no report of loss of life or casualty due to the quake that caused panic-stricken people to rush outdoors in their sleep around 01:37 hours (IST), sources said.
The seismological centre in Shillong said the earthquake, measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale, had its epicentre at 29.3 degree North Latitude and 94.7 degree East Longitude.
The great 1950 quake hit Assam on August 15 and its after shocks continued for three months and caused the mighty river Brahmaputra to change its course and swallow half of Dibrugarh city.
