Stamp Scam: Suspended DCP Pradeep Sawant moves HC Monday, June 6 2005 21:05 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Mumbai:
The Bombay High Court today (Jun 6, 2005) directed suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police Pradeep Sawant, to submit an undertaking to the court about the places he would visit in Ratnagiri and the duration of his stay there.
The direction came after Sawant made an application seeking permission to visit his hometown Ratnagiri.
The court would take decision tomorrow (Jun 7, 2005) on his application.
Sawant is charged with helping syndicate of Abdul Karim Telgi in the multi-crore scam.
The court has directed Sawant to disclose in his undertaking the places of his visit and the places of his stay and also asked him to leave his contact numbers with the investigating agency.
The tainted DCP had approached the High Court on May 26 seeking permission. However, the holiday bench directed him to approach the regular court, as there was no urgency in the matter. Accordingly, he moved the high court today.
Sawant was arrested by the Special Investigation Team on November 7, 2003 for his alleged complicity in the multi-crore fake stamp paper scam masterminded by Telgi. He was charged with dereliction of duty.
He was released on bail last year (2004) on the condition that he would not leave the jurisdiction of Mumbai and Pune.
