Goa: Cabinet recommends revocation of Prez rule Monday, June 6 2005 20:16 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
The Union Cabinet tonight (Jun 6, 2005) decided to recommend to President A P J Abdul Kalam revocation of Central rule in Goa.
After a brief Cabinet meeting presided by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee told reporters that the Cabinet met to consider the report of
Goa Governor S C Jamir who gave details of the numerical strength in the 39-member State Assembly.
Mukherjee said after the results of the by-elections in the State were announced, Congress party staked its claim to form the Government.
Observing that Jamir satisfied himself with the numerical strength in the House, Mukherjee said while Congress got 18 seats, its allies (Nationalist Congress Party) NCP bagged two seats and Maharashtra Gomantak Party one seat.
"Therefore, the Governor recommended revocation of President's Rule in his report sent to the President," he said.
Mukherjee said the Governor in his report said the President's rule, which was imposed in March this year, should be revoked and a popular Government installed.
"Cabinet accepted the recommendations of the Governor and accordingly recommended to the President for revocation of President's rule," he said.
When asked when the new Government would be formed, Mukherjee said it was likely to be formed tomorrow.
