Gujarat police arrest Mumbai bookie Shobhan Mehta
Friday, June 10 2005 09:54 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Ahmedabad: Gujarat police has arrested Shobhan Mehta alias Shoban Kalachowkie, the suspected Mumbai based cricket bookie and would bring him to Ahmedabad today (Jun 10, 2005), sources said in Ahmedabad yesterday (Jun 9, 2005).

Mehta was arrested by Ahmedabad crime branch officials after he was discharged from a hospital in Mumbai where he had got admitted after suddenly falling ill two days ago.

Gujarat police has a case registered against Mehta, suspected to be a key player in the global cricket betting racket and would question him in that connection, police added.

Though crime branch officials are tight-lipped about the developments concerning Mehta's arrival at present, sources said that their investigation would also look into his links with Arjun Nihalchandani alias Sindhi, who was arrested from Ahmedabad by Mumbai crime branch officials on the suspicion of being involved in this major racket.

The crime branch here has already arrested four more bookies from Ahmedabad for their alleged links with Mehta.

The sources however did not comment if the role of a Gujarat MP, who is said to have met Nihalchandani in Dubai, would be investigated into.
