64 killed in mountain torrent in northeast China

Kunming: At least 64 people, including 62 students, were dead and 17 others injured in the worst mountain torrent and flooding in Ning'an City, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, the local Government announced today (Jun 11, 2005).

The heavy flood and ensuing mountain torrent hit a primary school yesterday (Jun 10, 2005) afternoon in Shalan Town of Ning'an City, some 450 km from Harbin, the provincial capital.

Another 17 students, a teacher, and six villagers were receiving medical treatment, Xinhua news agency quoted officials from the rescue headquarters as saying.
