Security forces in Ayodhya area could be reduced
Thursday, June 16 2005 17:42 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Ayodhya: Pointing out that the huge force deployed at the disputed Ramjanambhoomi seemed "unnecessary", Director General of Uttar Pradesh Police, Yashpal Singh today (Jun 16, 2005) suggested a cut in deployment to avoid inconvenience to pilgrims and other visitors.

Talking to reporters after inspecting the security arrangements at the premises, he indicated that the question of a reduction in the security force could be considered at the meeting of the steering committee on Ayodhya.

At present, 12 companies of Police Armed Constabulary (PAC), four companies of CRPF and a large contingent of Civil police are posted at the disputed premises.

Singh, however, said the force could be increased from time to time during festivals and other special occasions, in view of the threat perception.

When asked about the security arrangements in Ayodhya keeping in mind the terrorist attack on temples in Gujarat and Jammu, he said the security cordon was already very tight and efforts were being made to modernise the logistics.

He also pointed out that UP police had taken strict measures to deal with the naxal-maoist menace in Mirzapur, Sonebhadra and Chandaili districts in the State.

About 35 naxalites had already been arrested in various operations, while his force was closely co-operating with the police of Bihar, Jharkhand and Chattisgarh for exchange of information, he added.
