Was hi-tech communication gadget meant for terror? Thursday, June 16 2005 16:26 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Police suspect the large consignment of hi-tech communication equipment, including satellite phones, seized at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi was meant for terrorists operating in Jammu and Kashmir.
"Satellite phones and radio transmitters are not used by common people and their being brought in an apparent clandestine manner is a matter of concern," a senior police official told sources in New Delhi today (Jun 16, 2005).
He said the consignment was probably meant for terrorists in J&K, as they are known to use such equipment for communicating with their masters across the border in Pakistan. Customs officials last evening intercepted a cargo comprising two carpets and three pillows at the airport when it arrived from Jeddah by an international carrier.
A search of the cargo led to recovery of six satellite phone hand sets, one large set of the phone, 40 radio transmitters and 60 antennae, police sources said.
A Kashmiri businessman Mohd Amin Khan, who came to receive the consignment, was detained and is being questioned by a joint team of Delhi Police and intelligence officials.
Interrogators are trying to ascertain as to whom Khan, who stays in Jangpura area of South Delhi, was intending to deliver the consignment and who had sent it.
