Power disruption affects trains; passengers agitate Thursday, June 16 2005 13:20 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Mumbai:
Power supply was disrupted in parts of the metropolis today (June16, 2005) due to a technical fault at Maharashtra State Electricity Board's (MSEB) Koyna switchyard, affecting railway services and causing inconvenience to millions of commuters and households.
"A fault was reported at 6.20 am in MSEB Koyna switchyard located at Trombay plant, which isolated the thermal power station of Tata Power Company (TPC) at Trombay," TPC said in a statement in Mumbai.
"Power supply to south Mumbai was affected for 40 minutes. TPC bypassed the fault and resumed supply at 7.01am. However, power supply to north Mumbai continues to remain unaffected," TPL said.
Meanwhile, railway traffic on both Western and Central lines, including Harbour section were affected, as the Railways are provided electricity by TPC and MSEB, Railway sources said.
The Railway officials said the power disruption occurred at 6.12 am but the supply was completely restored by 6.49 am.
The train services came to a halt between Bhandup and CST and Mankhurd and CST for 20 minutes, they said.
According to Western Railway sources, around 25 local trains were stranded on route around 6.15 am to 7.15 am, throwing train schedules out of gear.
The local trains were running behind schedule by 15-25 minutes, officials said.
Meanwhile, frustrated with the disruption in train services, commuters resorted to agitation at Seawood station on the Harbour line in New Mumbai. Railways curtailed services beyond Nerul as a precautionary measure and services were restored after 10am, officials added.
