Jammu:
Four persons, including two members of a Lashkar-e-Toiba suicide squad, were killed as alert policemen repulsed an attack in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir late last night (Jun 19, 2005).
Two militants attacked Sub-Divisional Police (SDP) office and a commando location at around 2315 IST in Mendhar town of Poonch district, DIG (Rajouri-Poonch) V K Singh said.
Militants hurled grenades and open indiscriminate fire on the SDP office and the commando location, he said adding alert security personnel fired back, leading to a fierce three-hour gunbattle.
Besides the two suicide attackers, a civilian and a Special Police Officer were killed in the gunfight, he said.
Two policemen, who were injured in the gunbattle, were being treated at hospitals.
Two AK rifles, three granades, seven magazines, 200 rounds, one IED and some explosive material was recovered from the slain militants, Singh said.
The civilian who was killed has been identified as Raman Kumar, a shopkeeper. The SPO has been identified as Imtiaz.
Two cops injured in the gunbattle have been identified as Mukesh Chander and Sunil.
