West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee today (Jun 23, 2005) said that Monday's (Jun 27, 2005) proposed State wide transport strike, called by left central trade unions, was aimed at 'creating pressure' on the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre to rollback the oil price hike.
''The transport strike has been called to put pressure on the Centre to reverse its decision on the hiked fuel price,'' the Chief Minister told reporters at the State secretariat,
Writers' Buildings.
The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU)-affiliated West Bengal Road Transport Workers Union has called a 24-hour transport strike on Monday to protest the Congress led UPA Government's decision.
CITU State president Shyamal Chakraborty said that he had appealed to all petrol and diesel-operated vehicles, except emergency services, to remain off the roads on June 27.
