Police arrests top ULFA leader in West Bengal Thursday, June 23 2005 16:27 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

A top United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) leader close to the outfit's 'commander-in-chief' Paresh Barua was arrested on a tip off from a jungle at Buxirhat in Toofanganj subdivision of West Bengal's Cooch Behar district, a senior police official said today (Jun 23, 2005).
Additional SP S Bhattacharya told PTI over phone from Coohbehar that Mozammel Haque alias Nazrul Ali, ULFA's 'cultural secretary' was arrested from as he was about to cross over to to Kamakhyaguri in Jalpaiguri district, adjoining Assam's Kokrajhar district yesterday (Jun 22, 2005).
Haque, wanted in several cases in Assam and North Bengal was also 'in-charge of the outfit's foreign affairs department', the police official said.
Haque who was unarmed did not put up any resistance.
Cooch Behar police superintendent, Jagmohan, said Haque was a resident of Golokganj of Golokganj in Assam's Dhubri district and had joined the ULFA in 1989. He was given charge of the outfit's cultural wing in 1993.
Inspector General of Police K L Meena has gone to Buxirhat to interrogate him. The Assam police have also been informed, Jagmohan added.
