Liberhan Panel to submit report within 3 months Sunday, June 26 2005 10:41 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
The Liberhan Commission, probing demolition of disputed Ram Janam Bhoomi Babri Masjid structure at Ayodhya, is to submit its final report within the three-month extension period.
"The report of the Commission will be final and is likely to be submitted during this extension granted to it by the Government," sources close to the Commission told sources in New Delhi ruling out the possibility of any interim report.
The term of the Commission, which was to expire on June 30, has been extended by three months till September 30.
"It does not appeal that an interim report will be submitted," the sources said adding it took over 11 years to even examine the key witness, Kalyan Singh, the former UP Chief Minister during whose tenure the medieval monument was razed.
Sources said deposition of Singh after more than 11 years helped the Commission in covering large "grey" areas.
The Commission was appointed within a fortnight to inquire into the circumstances leading to the demolition of disputed structure at Ayodhya on December 6, 1992.
On a pending application seeking to summon former Prime Minister Atal Bihar Vajpayee, sources said, "It is not closed and is still open...."
However, they were quick to add that time factor was against the Commission knowing Vajpayee's stature it is not certain which way the proceedings will lead.
On summoning Vajpayee as witness, Justice M S Liberhan, Chairman of the Commission, has kept everyone guessing by saying that it could be considered while writing the report.
