Kalam to visit tsunami-hit Nagapattinam on Jun 30

Nagapattinam: President A P J Abdul Kalam will be arriving in Nagapattinam on June 30 on a two-day visit to the district to visit tsunami-hit areas.

On June 30, the President will visit places affected by the December 26 killer waves in the nearby pilgrim town of Vailankanni. He would also visit the famous Basilica of Our Lady of Health, an official release said in Nagapattinam yesterday (Jun 26, 2005).

He would then visit Keechankuppam village, the worst affected by the tsunami, and Samandhanpettai and an orphanage where children who lost their parents in the tsunami strike had been accommodated.

He would visit the tsunami-hit Silladi Beach at nearby Nagore. The President would also offer prayers at the famous Nagore Dharga.

Kalam will also participate in the centenary celebrations of the National Higher Secondary School in Nagapattinam.

On July 1, the President will visit the temporary shelters provided to the tsunami victims in Tranquebar. He will also have a look at the desalination plant installed to convert seawater into potable water for the benefit of tsunami victims.

Security arrangements for the visit of the President were discussed at a meeting of revenue and police officials convened by District Collector-incharge Veerashanmugha Moni in Nagapattinam yesterday, the release added.
