China sends officials to artificial lake in Tibet Tuesday, June 28 2005 17:23 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Beijing:
China has dispatched officials to the site of the artificial lake, which caused floods in Himachal Pradesh and promised to provide India with the latest information on the situation there as soon as it is available.
"We are very much concerned with the impact of the floods on Parechchu River on the Indian side," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said today (Jun 28, 2005).
"The local Government has sent working groups to the artificial lake (in Tibet) to study and know about the actual situation there," Liu said.
Since the region is remotely located and there was lack of proper telecommunication and transportation systems, the Chinese personnel are trying their best to reach the spot as soon as possible, Liu told sources In Beijing.
"We have already on several occasions informed the Indian side about relevant information and we have urged the Indian side to take necessary precautions to fight against the flood," he said.
Recently, due to rising temperature and increase in thawing of snow in the mountainous area, waters of Parechchu River has gone up which resulted in the flood in the downstream areas, he said.
"We will stay in touch with the Indian side and keep them informed about the matter," he said while pointing out that Beijing did not have any information about the death of six Chinese nationals in the floods as stated by Indian Army.
Six bodies were seen floating in the Sutlej by Indian Army personnel near Sumdoh in Himachal Pradesh, about six km from the international border.
