JK: Troops kill civilian mistaking him for militant

Srinagar: In a case of mistaken identity, Army troops shot dead a civilian and wounded another in Rafiabad area of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday (Jun 29, 2005) sparking massive protests, official sources said.

Rashtriya Rifles troops had laid an ambush at Khagmulla in Panzla area of Rafiabad in Baramulla district in the wee hours following information about possible movement of militants, the sources said.

Mistaking two civilians Abdul Hamid Lone and Abdul Rashid Khan, who walking towards their house, as militants, the troops opened fire killing Lone instantly and seriously injuring Khan, the sources said.
