Imrana ready to abide with Shariat and Law of land Thursday, June 30 2005 14:57 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Muzaffarnagar:
The woman allegedly raped by her father-in-law today (Jun 30, 2005) said that she would abide by a religious edict telling her to separate from her husband and was confident of getting justice from the court of law.
"I will abide by the Shariat," said 28-year old Imrana, a mother of five children, in an interaction with media persons in the presence of Girija Vyas, Chairperson of National Commission for Women.
She, however, added that the Fatwa had not been communicated to her by any organisation.
"If I get the Fatwa, I will abide by it," she said adding that she would separate from her husband if it was ordered by the religious court.
The woman also said that she had immense faith in the law of the land and demanded strictest punishment for the accused father-in-law now in jail.
Refusing to be drawn into any controversy over the edict, Vyas said, "The issue should not be publicised but treated on humanitarian grounds."
"We are bound by the constitution," she said parrying comments on the edict and repeatedly told the media to handle the issue with great sensitivity.
Vyas also demanded a speedy trial on the lines of a fast track court in Rajasthan earlier this month in which the sentence was pronounced within 16 days.
