New Delhi:
One of the most wanted poachers, Sansar Chand, allegedly involved in disappearance of tigers from the Sariska wildlife reserve in Rajasthan, was arrested in New Delhi today (Jun 30, 2005).
Chand, who had been on the run since jumping bail in May last year, was arrested from Patel Nagar in west Delhi by the Crime Branch sleuths, police sources said.
Chand was wanted in over 30 cases of poaching and animal skin smuggling across five States.
His name figured in a CBI report on the disappearance of tigers from the Sariska reserve.
The accused, reportedly having several hideouts in Delhi, was arrested in Rajasthan earlier and sentenced to five years' rigorous imprisonment by an Ajmer court in April last year. He was granted bail the very next month, which he jumped.
Chand has been involved in poaching activities for over three decades and was first arrested with tiger skins in 1974.
Many of his family members are also involved in the trade and his wife, son and nephew were in a Jaipur jail in this connection.
