Three JK women among 1,000 Nobel Prize nominees

Srinagar: Three Kashmiri women are among 92 Indians in a list of 1,000 women worldwide who have been nominated for this year's Nobel Peace Prize.

Parveena Ahanger, Nighat Shafi Pandit and Dilafroz Qazi have been nominated for their contribution towards peace and human dignity by '1,000 Women for Nobel Peace Prize 2005' - an organisation supported by the Swiss Government, UNIFEM and UNDP.

Over the past decade, Ahanger (48) has become a prominent human rights activist in Kashmir.

A woman living with the trauma of her son's custodial disappearance, she formed an organisation by the name of Association of Parents of Displaced Persons to fight human rights abuse. She was instrumental in building up pressure against the Government to provide information on those disappearing from custody.

Pandit (54) is the Chairperson of Human Effort for Love and Peace foundation, an NGO working for the welfare of orphans and rehabilitation of widows.

Pandit is also actively involved in the promotion of peace and harmony in Kashmir.

Qazi (43) runs an engineering college in Pattan and is also running several primary schools.
