TN CM speaks to Modi; Announces aid to Gujarat Monday, July 4 2005 12:09 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Expressing deep shock and anguish over the loss of lives and unprecedented havoc caused by floods in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha yesterday night (July 3, 2005) announced a contribution of Rs five crore for relief works besides pledging her government's full support in tackling the situation.
In a letter to her Gujarat counterpart Narendra Modi, she said she was sending a cheque for Rs five crore to the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund from Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund of Tamil Nadu for providing relief as may be necessary, an official release said in Chennai.
She also spoke to Modi earlier in the day enquiring about the situation and the assistance needed.
Recalling the support extended by the Gujarat Government headed by Modi to Tamil Nadu at the time of the tsunami disaster, she said the people of Tamil Nadu and her Government would like to express their solidarity and togetherness with people of Gujarat and the government in this hour of crisis.
The Chief Minister has stated that Tamil Nadu Government's manpower and resources would be at the disposal of the Gujarat Government in the relief effort. She had also asked the state Chief Secretary to be in touch with his Gujarat counterpart and provide any further support that may be needed.
Law Minister D Jayakumar would lead a team of officials to Gujarat and personally handover the cheque to Modi.
