Kanchi case: Copies of chargesheet to be furnished

Chennai: The Kanchi Seer Jayendra Saraswathi, the main accused in the Radhakrishnan assault case and 11 other accused will be furnished copies of the 600 page chargesheet by a metropolitan magistrate court here on July 18.

The 23rd Metropolitan magistrate, Uma Maheswari, before whom the case came up today, ordered that copies of the chargesheet be provided to the accused on that day.

Besides the Seer, who has been listed as accused no 1, the others include Mutt manager Sundaresa Iyer and Raghu, brother of the junior Seer, Vijayendra Saraswathi.

The accused, who have all been granted bail in the case, except Ravi Subramaniam, accused turned approver, Appu and Kathiravan, appeared in the court at Saidapet for the first time today (July 6, 2005) since the chargesheet was taken on file by Uma Maheswari last month.

They have been charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections for alleged criminal conspiracy, attempt to murder and acts undertaken by several persons in furtherance of a common intention.

In all, 81 prosecution witnesses have been cited in the chargesheet, pertaining to the assault of former Mutt devotee Radhakrishnan, his wife and attendant in his city residence on September 2 2002.
